Nassau is
the capital and largest city in The Bahamas. It is located on
the island of New Providence, the most heavily populated island
and most active economic zone. Its economy depends on tourism
and international financing.

Prince George Wharf is
the cruise ship port from where it is an easy walk to historical
Bay Street, the Straw Market, and a series of public beaches.

Nassau is dominated by the Atlantis
mega-resort and casino
development on nearby Paradise Island, which employs over
6000 Bahamians.

Atlantis boasts 40 restaurants, various entertainment venues, a
dolphin encounter, a marine habitat adventure zone and water

Nassau's growth began
with the influx of thousands of Empire Loyalists and their
slaves, and the resettlement of slaves liberated from ships by
the Royal Navy.

From the statue of
Woodes Roger in front of the historic British Colonial Hotel, to
the one of Queen Victoria in front of the Parliament Building,
Nassau is rife with British colonial images.

The Pompey Museum is a
museum of slavery, located in a former slave auction house, the
oldest building in the historic district.

The Junkanoo Museum
highlights the music, dance and costumes of the Junkanoo Festival celebrated on Boxing Day and New
Years. |

At Government House,
the official home of the Governor General, the statue of
Christopher Columbus has been removed as part of Bahamas'
colonial reckoning.

The Garden of
Remembrance honoring the vets of WWI lies between the Nassau
Supreme Court and the Public Library, a former (1797)
jail. |

Strategic stairways connect downtown Nassau with Fort Fincastle
atop Bennett's Hill, built in 1793 to protect Nassau town and
its harbour. |

Several attractive
historical churches lie throughout downtown Nassau, the oldest
being Christ Church Anglican Cathedral descended from the oldest
congregation in the Bahamas.

Pirates of Nassau is a
museum documenting the city's history as an 18th century pirate
base, with exhibits and a replica pirate ship. |

Junkanoo Beach and
Western Esplanade Beach have rental umbrellas, beach bars and
fish and jerk chicken grills.
