St. Kitts, or St. Christophers, is the
larger of the two islands that make up the federated nation of
St. Kitts and Nevis.
The islands are the summits of a submerged mountain range which
forms the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Tectonic Plate.

From the heights of Brimstone Hill, the town of Sandy Point can
be seen below, and the island of Sint Eustatius in the distance.

At a narrow isthmus on the east end, both the Atlantic and
Caribbean oceans can be seen as well as the twin island of Nevis
a short ferry ride away.

Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site is a
well-preserved example of 17th and 18th century military
architecture in a Caribbean context.

Designed by the British and built by African slave labour, the
fortress testifies to European colonial expansion and the
emergence of new societies in the Caribbean. |

Basseterre, the capital of the federation, was once the capital
of the entire French West Indies, until the expulsion of the
French in 1727. |

Basseterre has been destroyed many times by colonial wars,
earthquakes, fire, floods, riots and hurricanes. Despite that
many historical buildings still exist.

Sheltered Basseterre Bay is surrounded by lush green hills and
mountains. There is rapid expansion of high-end condos and
hotels throughout the area.

Like most Caribbean countries, the economy centers on duty-free
shopping zones near the cruise port. |

From Picadilly Circus, to St. Georges Anglican Church and
Independence Square, there are reminders of British colonial
influence everywhere.

The Romney Manor sugar estate was established in 1623. The area
has beautifully restored gardens.
|

The estate is now home to Caribelle batik where artisans
demonstrate and sell their work.
